Al Ard International Documentary Film Festival About Palestine

After ten consecutive edition of Al Ard Doc Film Festival – Review of documentary films about Palestine, which have been gathered significant evidence of interest from the public and critics, the Associazione Amicizia Sardegna Palestina (Sardinia Palestine Friendship Association) presents at Caliari – Cineteatro Nanniloy the 2013 Al Ard – International Documentary Film Festival about Palestine and Arab World from 21-23 Nov. 2013

This unique festival in Sardinia will show the most important and recent documentary productions at international level on the traditions, lifestyles, history, politics, religion and society in Palestine and the Arab world. Al Ard will also include a section out of competition with selected short films and works of fiction. Supervised by Monica Maurer with the artistic direction of Giuseppe Pusceddu, it will be realized by Sardinia Palestine Friendship Association, a no-profit cultural association active for several years in spreading Arabic culture by documentary films about Palestine and Middle East.

Also this year, the Festival will be completed by prestigious events of music, literature and poetry. In addition, there will be debates and insights, an opportunity for an interesting exchange between the audience and filmmakers. Then we want remember the important  event dedicated to schools entitled “Palestine in classroom”.

Al Ard Doc Film Festival is designed as an international competition on the theme of Palestine and Arab world, divided into two sections: “competing films” and “out of competition”. The “competing” section is designed for documentary films about cultural, social or political issues related to Palestinian and Arab world, which will be admitted to the final selection after an international call and a preliminary selection by the Selection board and Artistic Direction. Finally the eligible films will be voted by the Expert Jury and the Public Jury, which will assign them prizes during the closing ceremony.

The Awards for the competing section are:
a.    Best film in competition
b.    Al Ard Award (Best film about Palestina)
c.    Award for the debut film (Emerging Director)
d.    Audience Award

The “out of competition” section consist of the fiction movies and shorts movies about Palestine and Arab world selected by Selection board and Artistic direction. The movies of this section will not be awarded. The films of both sections will become a permanent part of the Historical multimedia archive of Sardinia Palestine Friendship Association, which is already an important point of reference for students and scholars interested in documentary productions about the Arab World.

All the films which are worldwide produced between 2009 and 2013 and have the theme of the Festival can participate to this.

ARD AL DOC FILM FESTIVAL will take place from the 21st to the 23rd of November 2013 at the Cineteatro Nanni Loy, in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. The event will conclude with the final ceremony, in presence of some film directors.

بعد النجاح الكبير الذي حققه المهرجان في دوراته السابقة، سواء على صعيد الجمهور وسواء على صعيد النقاد، والاهتمام الذي حاز عليه في الصحافة المحلية والعالمية، تقدّم جمعية الصداقة سردينا- فلسطين هذا العام 2013 المهرجان الدولي الحادي عشر للسينما الفلسطينية والعربية من خلال مسابقة وجوائز

المهرجان هو الوحيد من نوعه في جزيرة سردينيا وفي إيطاليا، فهو يقدم لجمهور الجزيرة وللجمهور الإيطالي آخر وأهم ما تنتجه السينما الوثائقية العالمية حول المجتمع الفلسطيني والمجتمعات العربية وعاداتها وتقاليدها وتاريخها والسياسة المتعلقة بها

يترأس المهرجان المخرجة والخبيرة السينمائية Monica Maurer مونيكا ماورير ويتولى الإدارة الفنية إلى جانب المخرجة مونيكا ماورير الكاتب Giuseppe Pusceddu جوزبي بوشيدو

تنظم المهرجان جمعية الصداقة سردينيا فلسطين وهي جمعية ثقافية ليس لها أهداف ربحية، وهي تعمل منذ أكثر من خمسة عشر عاما على نشر الثقافة العربية والفلسطينية بشكل خاص من خلال الأدب والسينما، حيث استصافت العديد من الكتاب والشعراء والفنانين والسينمائيين العرب والفلسطينيين

يمكن تقديم الأفلام للمشاركة في المسابقة بغرض الحصول على جائزة كما يمكن عرض الأفلام خارج المسابقة وبدون جوائز

Noon Session In Favour of Israel at IAEA

تنظيم مجحف بحق كلمة فلسطين في الدورة 57 من المؤتمر العام لوكالة الطاقة الذرية

Why did the organisers of the plenary sessions of the IAEA 57th General conference delay the speech of the Palestinian delegation until the middle of the night of Sep. 19 2013, the last available slot?

Was this unjust organizing deliberate and calculated to favour israel, the zionist state which has occupied Palestine for decades?

The appointed Palestinian Ambassador to Austria and International organizations, Salah Abed el-Shafi, a representative of Palestinian Authority who apparently received his newly post on last September 15 2013 and who succeeds Dr. Zuhier Al-Wazir, was not able to attend most of the sessions at the IAEA between September16 to 20, 2013. He only attended the last day’s sessions because of the time consuming procedures which must be followed in Austria and the international institutions by newly diplomats who arrive at a mission.

Mr. Hazen Shabat, the Counsellor and Chargé on behalf of Ambassador Abed el-Shafi, was supposed to deliver the speech on behalf of the Palestinian Authority during the second slot at the noon session after lunch break on September 19. I had arranged my schedule accordingly. Suddenly, the plenary board schedule changed and the speech of the Palestinian delegation was re-scheduled at the end of the evening session of September 18, shortly before midnight and the closing of the building.

In contrast, israel was listed in the 4th slot after Canada on the noon session of 18, when almost all state delegations attended. The plenary board schedule of September 19 2013 was empty and until 13PM, and during the afternoon there was apparently no session.

 

When Mr. Shabat was suppose to deliver the speech for the Palestinian delegation, the conference room was empty save for the few people who were obliged to attend, the eyes of the Chairman and the Secretariat of the meeting were sleepy and the organizers of the conference room were in hurry, waiting anxiously for the end of the day so they could go home. I was told that even before the Palestinian speech, several participants were seen sleepy and snoring in the room while waiting the delivery of the speeches of their countries.

The statement of Palestine highlighted important points about the dangers of the israeli nuclear weapons in Palestine and its negative impact on the nature and the on the health of the Palestinian people, and the peace and security of the peoples.

Mr. Shabat spoke about the deteriorated situation of the infrastructure of a number of israeli nuclear facilities at a time while the Palestinians do not have a protection system which is able to help them to face any nuclear disaster which may erupt in the region.

The bitterness of the Palestinian speech, which did not cater to the israeli delegation and which they did not want other member states to the IAEA to know or to hear about, was perhaps the reason why it was re-scheduled to a slot where nobody would hear it. I can only hope that I am not right with my analysis.

لماذا وضعت وكالة الطاقة الذرية كلمة فلسطين على جدول أعمال المؤتمر في ساعة متأخرة قبيل منتصف ليلة الأربعاء 19 سبتمبر الجاري؟؟
وهل جاء هذا التنظيم المجحف بحق دولة  فلسطين التي تتمتع بعضوية مراقب في المؤسسات الدولية لصالح إسرائيل, أي الدولة الصهيونية التي تحتل فلسطين منذ عقود من الزمن؟؟

وكانت اللجنة المنظمة للدورة العادية السابعة والخمسين لوكالة الطاقة الذرية قد أدرجت كلمة فلسطين على جدول أعمال جلسة ما بعد ظهر يوم الخميس 19 سبتمبر الجاري, إلا ان المفاجئة التي دفعتني لكتابة هذه السطور هو التغير الفجائي لموعد إلقاء كلمة فلسطين, ليصبح آخر كلمة تلقى في ساعة متأخرة من ليل يوم الأربعاء 18 سبتمبر

وبتمعن بسيط في برنامج التغيير بدى لي ببساطة بأنه قد جاء لصالح الدولة العبرية الصهيونية, أو ما يسمى ب “إسرائيل”, أي دولة الإحتلال التي لم تعرف عصور التاريخ من قبل إحتلالا آخر دام أمده مثلها

عندما ألقى القائم بأعمال سفير دولة فلسطين, السيد حازم شبات كلمة فلسطين ليلة 19 سبتمبر 2013, كانت عقارب الساعة تقترب من منتصف الليل, وكانت قاعة الأجتماع تكاد تكون خالية من الدول الأعضاء المشاركة في لقاء وكالة الطاقة ألذرية, وكان النعاس يغالب عيون رئيس وسكرتارية الجلسة, وكان القائمون على ترتيب القاعة ينتظرون إنهاء الجلسة بفارغ الصبر, في حين شوهد مشاركون يغطون في سبات عميق داخل القاعة حتى ما قبل إلقاء السيد شبات لكلمته القصيرة والمقتضبة

السيد شبات القى كلمة موجزة  تضمنت نقاطا نقد موجهة لبرنامج دولة الإحتلال الإسرائيلي الذي أصبح دون أدنى شك يهدد أمن وسلام وصحة شعب فلسطين, ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط, بل والأمن والسلام العالميين

وتطرق السيد شبات إلى الوضع الإنشائي لعدد من المنشآت النووية الإسرائيلية, في الوقت الذي يفتقر فيه الشعب الفلسطيني لمنظومة حماية تمكنه من مواجهة أي حادثة نووية قد يتعرض لها

جدير بالذكر بأن سفير فلسطين الجديد, صلاح عبد الشافي الذي تسلم مهام عمله في 15 سبتمير الجاري لم يتمكن من حضور الجلسة الإفتتاحية وأعمال المؤتمر وذلك حتى صباح يوم الجمعة. وربما يعود ذلك للإجراءات اللوجستية التي يتوجب إتباعها من قبل الدبلوماسيين قبيل مزاولة مهام عملهم في الجمهورية النمساوية والمؤسسات الدولية التي تعمل فوق أراضيها

Corruption and Honor Killings Sponsored by The EU

On last 31 July 2012 I questioned the EU, via the contact form on their website, about their policies regarding Palestine. My main issue was the continued financial support given to the PA despite the increase in “honor killings” of women and despite the increasing and apparent for everybody to see grave abuses of human rights of the Palestinians in the West Bank and the criminal behavior of the PA and their proteges. I received an astonishing answer from them via Email, which I share and comment below.

According to the EU
“President Mahmoud Abbas is not a criminal – he is the President of the Palestinian Authority and Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and recognised as such by the entire international community, including Israel.”

This is wrong in several ways. Abbas is the de-facto “President” of the PA and PLO. He was elected in the elections of 2006 as President, and his term expired on January 19 2008 according to the Palestinian constitution. So seen, Abbas is not the President of anything but a self-appointed dictator with no constituency beyond the goons paid by the EU and USA, and the people surrounding him have taken actions apt to remind Palestinians every day since 2006 that they are nothing but criminals. The point in the disingenuous answer of the EU is exactly this: Abbas and his co-perpetrators are imposing criminal and genocidal policies upon the Palestinians on behalf of israel and an “international community” subservient to zionist interests. The individuals who comprise this so-called “international community” are often described in their countries of origin with endearing terms such as incompetents, criminals, psychopaths among others. This illustrates the American saying, birds of a feather flock together.

So it is also no surprise that the EU, as part of that “international community” of lawless bumblers, would disregard its own laws.For example, article 2 of the EU-Israel association agreement states that the human rights situation must be taken into account in deals between the EU and israel. This has apparently never happened, because the last EU representative who dared to criticize israels extermination policies towards us Palestinians, Anna Lindh was murdered by the “crazy loner” who always appears on scene when jewish interests are in peril of defeat.

In summary the position of the EU is a continuation of the colonial policies of western powers, who have always held in high esteem the thieves and mass murderers who looted their own countries on behalf of these same powers.

The EU sends gifts of hundreds of millions of Euros each year, on the back of increasingly impoverished European tax payers, to the PA regime, to protégès of the PA, to elements of the occupation and to a gaggle of jewish groups cashing in big money on the back of Palestinian misery. These hundreds of millions of Euros flow despite the deteriorated and deteriorating financial situation across the EU, due to a storm of financial destruction unleashed by irresponsible EU policies which has ravaged all European countries.

Even if Abbas is the “President” of the Palestinian Authority and Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and “recognized as such by the entire international community, including Israel”, this does not relieve him of charges of financial and administrative corruption.

It is very clear that the EU donations reach ONLY a certain class of the Palestinians. Among the beneficiaries of the EU largesse are the President Abbas himself and his family, the other higher-ups in the PA and the PLO and their respective families, and assorted collaborators.

• How does the EU explain, for example, what it means that President Abbas spends five million Euros monthly for the expenses of his house and family, and another five million Euros as travel expenses?
• And how does the EU explain the causes of extreme poverty affecting beyond 70% of Palestinians while Abbas and his coterie of knaves and fat cats live in unimaginable luxury in Ramallah?

I am sure that the EU will find some disingenuous, barefaced lie to plausibly deny any connection between their largesse towards the PA and the misery affecting Palestinians in the West Bank, despite the stream of visitors from the EU to Ramallah who witness this shame.

• Will the EU state in yet another anonymous communiqué that all Palestinians live the same luxurious life like the PA elements?

To be clear, the EU policy towards Palestine is no exception. Just as they support Abbas, they support the groups of criminals who ousted Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak (whom they bankrolled while they found him useful), and the same goes for the ousted dictator of Tunisia, the murdered dictator of Libya, and the (still) supported dictator of Syria, together with the gangs of criminals and terrorists whom they support, for show, against these dictators.

The EU says in their answer that Abbas is not a criminal. The EU is constantly complaining about those criminals who, they say, are the heads of states and governments of other peoples. Of course, those are thieves, dictators, criminals and murderers, but what the EU conveniently omits to say is that these scoundrels were propped up by them.

Now the EU is doing the same in Palestine in favour of Israel, to lengthen the age of the Israeli occupation in my homeland, to strengthen its economy while you are destroying the economy of the EU and what remains of Palestine.

• Of course, how could anybody dare to call a thief among thieves, a miserable traitor and tyrant bankrolled by the EU a criminal?

Criminals are only the others, the cleptocracies who the EU does not prop up or where the role of the EU propping them up is not so blatant.

Yes, the EU and the “international community” recognized “President” Abbas and his tinpot ministerial cabinet only because he enforces zionist policies in Palestine and protects israel. On account of this, the EU can no longer be said to respect human rights as per its own constitution, passed against the will of the majority of the EU population. What makes the EU policies criminal is something called “terra nullius”, a set of policies of the british empire declaring pieces of land they coveted as empty of people – what allowed them to genocide anybody in their way because these peoples “would have died off anyway”.

This kind of policy is criminal in current international law and is exactly what zionism amounts to: genocide under a mantle of legality, and this is what the EU, impersonated by the very British Catherine Ashton is supporting with diplomatic and pecuniary largesse towards Abbas and his cronies.

The EU further states in their answer to my questions:

Although it is not clear what exactly you are referring to by “increased number of killing women in Palestine”, you can be assured that the European Union (EU) monitors closely the situation of women’s rights throughout the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and finances a number of projects supporting women’s rights there. Human rights violations in the oPt – including those against women – are addressed in the regular bilateral dialogue between the EU and the Palestinian Authority within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy and concerns related to human rights are also raised at the highest political level.

Regarding the misunderstanding of the EU regarding the “increased number of killing women in Palestine”, during the last weeks of July 2012 several women were murdered in Palestine for reasons of “honor”. Below are the only few cases which have made it to the media:

• On July 13, a woman was thrown into a septic well and left to die near Hebron
• On July 19, a father killed his daughter, Randa Mahariq, 34, in Al-Samoua near Hebron
• On July 22 a father slaughtered his student daughter after breakfast in Tulkarem
• On July 31 a man slaughtered his wife in the streets of Bethlehem
• Some months ago, a student of English at Hebron University was thrown into an artesian well by her relatives and left to die
• Also some months ago, the PA minister of civil affairs raped a minor girl and remains unpunished to this day

The murder and violent abuse of women has increased in Palestine during the last years to the point of becoming a modern way of life under the full protection of the Palestinian National Authority. The crimes are perpetrated by the families of these women and girls. At the same time the PA insists in protecting the criminals, firstly by keeping in place laws which legalize crimes against women and institutionalize the discrimination of women, and secondly by actively covering up these crimes whenever they are discovered.

In the West Bank and Gaza there are no laws that forbid women from being murdered or prosecute their murderers. The Egyptian laws that are implemented in Gaza and the Jordanian Laws implemented in the West Bank discriminate between men and women, and protect the murderers of women. “Honor” has become a justification for murdering women and protecting the murderers, as well as keeping the power in the hands of the men who lead the society and impede women from reaching power. This state of affairs is a clear threat for all women who seek equality with men in their rights.

The Palestinian media covers up the crimes against women committed under the “honor” label. They write very briefly about them without releasing further details. In this way, the media protects the criminals in the Palestinian authoritarian patriarchal society and abet the continuing of the shameful practice of “honor” murders in our society.

These crimes are banned from public discussion and publication, because it is a societal tabu but mostly because the PA receives money from western countries, and the donors could not justify the largesse at home if these crimes became more widely known. In all cases, these crimes are treated in a way that will cover up the perpetrators, protecting and helping them to continue perpetrating more crimes, and by punishing the victims (women, minors, girls) or killing them in so-called “honor” killings.

I would be more than happy to receive any recommendation from the EU which would help stop these vile crimes, and any such recommendations would remain off-the-record and will hopefully help to better protect the victims in the future.

The EU continues in their answer

Human rights violations in the oPt – including those against women – are addressed in the regular bilateral dialogue between the EU and the Palestinian Authority within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy and concerns related to human rights are also raised at the highest political level.

The dialogue between the EU and PA concerning human rights and women rights is not enough. The Palestinian Authority MUST END the LAWS which protect the practice of murdering women in Palestine NOW. The Palestinian minister of justice is aware of these issues as I called his attention to this during a UN conference here in Vienna several years ago, before representatives of EU countries. The minister promised to become active, but nothing has happened until now, 3-4 years later.

There are many reports of sexual harassment of PA higher-ups being against women, both employees of the PA and not. Several of these women have reportedly been murdered in order to protect the perpetrators. Also, this knowledge that there are many PA elements involved in sexual harassment and abuse of women people is why the PA does not want to change the laws which discriminate against women and protect their murderers and abusers.

To illustrate the state of affairs regarding womens rights in Palestine, a personal story.

According to my knowledge, Samir Aoudeh, the husband of my sister who is of profession a PA security element, one of the people whose monthly salary is paid with EU money, used to have a brothel behind the back of my sister. Ramallah – Kawther Salam – The Palestinian “Prime Minister” Dr. Salam Fayyad and the “President” Mahmoud Abbas have both targeted the Palestinian resistance and the opposition to their power in coordination with the Israeli and US intelligence, jailing and torturing dozens of politician figures, university students, doctors and engineers from Fatah, Hamas and other parties.

Recently the PA murdered a famous Palestinian military figure, Osama Aqel Mansour at the headquarters of the military intelligence.

Aqel was murdered because he knew which elements of the PA were involved in selling several buildings and lands of Palestinian property to the Israeli occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank. He was was thrown from a window of the military intelligence court just before giving testimony about the names of PA criminal elements.

On last Saturday, August 4 2012, the PA jailers murdered another prisoner, Raed Mahmoud Deeb, 49 years old, at the “Tulkarem center of reform and rehabilitation” (a jail). The criminal acts of the PA have immensely worsened the situation in the West Bank and created huge anger among all Palestinians

Wednesday August 8 2012 – Eyewitnesses reported an exchange of fire between PA police and unknown assailants at Dr. Salam Fayyad’s compound in Ramallah yesterday, but there were no reports of injuries according to the eyewitnesses. PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad was not in his compound during the shooting. He was touring in southern West Bank towns near Hebron

According to the Palestinian eyewitnesses, the exchange of gunfire in the Ramallah lasted around a minute. The Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds said that there had been no casualties. A few minutes after the incident began police were deployed in force, scouring the area for shell casings.

The Al-Quds newspaper reported about the exchange of fire yesterday night. The newspaper posted a picture of the Palestinian Special Forces around the Fayyad compound, but today morning the newspaper deleted the news about the shooting from its website.

According to Reuters, the Palestinian Authority officials declined to comment, citing the sensitivity of the incident, and there was no immediate indication of who was behind the attack.

The shooting occurred on a main thoroughfare clustered with modern government buildings under constant police guard.

Ramallah is the Palestinians’ administrative capital in the West Bank, under limited self-rule by the so-called Palestinian Authority, in territory Israel captured in the 1967 war, and for which Palestinians have long sought statehood.

The Palestinian Authority has launched a security crackdown in the West Bank in recent months, arresting scores of suspects in a security sweep that has sparked anger against PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah-led government.

The crackdown, led by elite presidential guards and the “counter-terrorism” unit, is seen as a determined bid by the Western-backed authority to regain control of key areas and smash armed elements that could challenge its power. Fayyad told Reuters in June 2012 that the operation would be broad-based and long lasting.
